The Means to Settle is an exhibition of site responsive works exploring concepts of ephemerality and ‘other spaces’. Artists intervene through time-based media, performance and installation for a one night only event.

The Frank Kitts car-park - a space of transience, a signifier holding history of occupation, settlement, physical-planning and capital in Wellington’s cbd. The Wilson’s operated car park holds function to the pursuit of corporate clients engaging in their daily commute, alongside a regular weekly market aimed at supporting local businesses in craft, art and design. Interjecting amongst the network of co-facilitation Wilson’s has so keenly aspired to endorse, The Means to Settle, brings forth further response from a Fine Arts perspective.

The artists have re-imagined the Wilson’s-operated commercial space, emulating its sum and substance into new narratives, reflecting on its transient, corporate, and industrial nature. An intervention and obstruction of space that aims to bring new life into the site, whilst also investigating its current state and history.

The group’s practices vary between multiple time based disciplines. These vary from narrative based and abstracted video, sound based work, spatial and sculptural installation, as well as some performative elements. Aspects of personal narrative, as well as greater themes such as time, space and place, are reflected through collaborative intervention of the site.

This exhibiton is curated by Massey University students as part of the College of Creative Arts. Thank you to our lecturers Rachel Rakena and Simon Morris for your contributions.
